World Journal Samsam

Samsam is a free world magazine for children aged 9 to 13 years. It appears 7 times per year. Each edition contains a lesson.

Samsam is about the lives of children in developing countries. The magazine includes reports, interviews, lots of photos, comics and puzzles for students. The lesson for teachers contains lesson plans for use of samsam in the classroom. There is also a website: www.samsam.net. There are videos, photos and background information. Teachers can find this material in the lesson.

Samsam provides inspiration to teachers to devise their own activities: light, medium or strong.

Examples:

  • Light: to acquire knowledge
Students read (part of) the journal and discuss in groups what they liked and found interesting. What are the similarities and differences with their own lives?
  • Medium: on investigation
Students in groups make a presentation. Each group chooses a theme from the magazine or the website www.samsam.net. They search for matching stories, pictures and videos and present their findings to the class.
  • Strong: act themselves
Students organize a Ghanaian afternoon with games and food for their grandfathers and grandmothers. They provide their own advertisements in local newspapers.
